O campeonato teve início no mês de agosto, e logo no jogo de estreia, o Dragão venceu a Hidrolandense pelo placar de 2 a 0. A primeira fase da Taça Mané Garrincha teve 11 jogos no total. Com isso, o time goiano somou sete vitórias, dois empates e duas derrotas, tendo um total de 69,6% de aproveitamento, ficando em segundo lugar na tabela.
A fase semifinal teve início no mês de outubro, onde o time enfrentou a Aparecidense fora de casa e venceu por 2 a 0. Com o resultado positivo, o Dragão levou a vantagem para o jogo de volta que terminou sem gols, garantindo a classificação para a final do campeonato.
Partidas finais do campeonato
O Vila Nova garantiu a vaga na final após superar o Goiás nos pênaltis. Dessa forma, as equipes fizeram partida de ida na última quinta-feira (7), no Estádio Onésio Brasileiro Alvarenga. O jogo terminou em 2 a 2, com dois gols de Keven e pelo Tigrão, Gabriel e João Henrique descontaram.
Com o placar, em caso de empate na partida de volta, o jogo iria para as penalidades máximas, e não foi diferente. O Vila Nova abriu o placar no segundo tempo do jogo, com gol de João Bom. Logo após, a partida foi marcada por princípio de confusão entre os jogadores das equipes.
Nos acréscimos da partida, Yuri deixou tudo igual para o Dragão: 1 a 1. Já nos pênaltis, o Atlético-GO começou bem convertendo a cobrança.
